Before you can get started digging in with an Instagram content plan when marketing your wedding photography business, you need to have clearly defined goals.
If you jump into your business’s Instagram without knowing what it is you want to accomplish, you will end up posting and engaging without purpose This will send you straight into the trap of getting disappointed about follower count and the number of likes on your pictures. Goals will give you a clear mindset that will allow you to focus and use Instagram with purpose!
Think of the Instagram feed of your photography business just as you would any other business marketing campaign. There is an end result in store, and your content plan should revolve around your goals.
For many of us, the goal is to book weddings and secure paying clients through Instagram. However, if you think outside the box you may think of a few other goals that marketing your business on Instagram can help you accomplish!
- Local Brand Awareness: Instagram is an awesome place to get your business name out there! You can get your name out to local wedding vendors and venues by doing your research, finding them on Instagram, and ensuring that you are showing them some love!
- Set Business Expectations: Use your Instagram feed, stories, IGTV, and highlights to set expectations for potential clients. Share the ins and outs of your business so that your couples know exactly what to expect when they book you! Tell them about your turnaround time, what to expect for an engagement session, how long it takes you to answer email, etc. The sky is the limit!
- Share your personality: Wedding photographers ALWAYS advise couples to make sure they mesh with their photographer’s personality, amiright? Use Instagram as the platform to give your community an inside look into who YOU are. Share some of your favorite things, what you do on a typical night or weekend when you aren’t photographing a wedding. This is a great time to
Some other goals may include:
-Keeping up with vendor relationships
-Creating partnerships with brands or fellow vendors
-National Brand Awareness: IG is an awesome way to appeal to the masses
Sit down with a piece of paper and write out a short list of goals. Brainstorm ways that Instagram can help you achieve these goals! The thing that is most important to remember is that your goals are UNIQUE TO YOUR BUSINESS. My goals may be completely different than your goals.
How Many Goals Should I Have?
I advise everyone to have 3 goals. You are going to have one main primary goal for marketing your photography business on Instagram. Your second goal should in some way compliment your primary goal. Your last goal I like to call the wild card.
This can be another goal that compliments your primary goal, OR you can think of a long-term goal that you know you want to accomplish. Perhaps you want to speak at Wedding MBA or at a Photography Summit. Instagram is a perfect place to plant seeds for goals you want to pursue later down the road.

Choose 3 goals to focus on and get started with a plan on how you are going to accomplish your business goals through Instagram marketing! Be sure to be CONSISTENT, making sure that your main focus each and every time you post is to achieve your goals.
Note: Do take time to reflect every quarter to make sure that your Instagram goals are still in line with the goals of your photography business. Your goals should shift right along with your business!
