Planning a wedding can be hard, really hard! On top of all the time spent on planning, many brides that I have worked with are also stressed out about budget. And I completely get it! Weddings are ridiculously expensive. However, after shooting countless weddings and working with numerous brides, I have determined that there are two things that a bride should never attempt to cut costs on. I am sure you can guess the first one! Make sure to always pick a reliable photographer. Can you guess the second? Well, since I am guessing you have already read the title of the post you probably got it right! Never attempt to DIY your own hair and makeup. Ready to know why? Make sure to look at the 5 Reasons to Hire a Pro Hair and Makeup Stylist on Your Wedding Day below.

5 Reasons to Hire a Pro Hair and Makeup Stylist

When it comes to DIY projects, I have seen couples create some truly amazing aspects (floral arrangements, décor, etc.) to add to their wedding while still staying within their budget. However, it’s hard for me to think of a time when I have ever dealt with a bride who was happy about the decision to do her own hair and makeup for the wedding. (And when I say DIY hair and makeup, I don’t necessarily just mean when the bride actually does it herself. It is still DIY if a friend or family member does it, anyone who isn’t a professional.)

I have seen brides in tears because their hair didn’t turn out like it did all the other times their friends did it in the past. Or families shocked at how pale the bride looks when they get the wedding pictures back. Not to mention all of the uneven skin, weird powder that shows up in the pictures, sweat, running mascara, frizzy hair, etc. Either way, there weren’t any good situations.

5 Reasons to Hire a Pro Hair and Makeup Stylist on your Wedding Day

Without further ado, I give you the Top 5 Reasons to Hire a Pro Hair and Makeup Stylist on Your Wedding Day:

1. Even skin tones throughout the day. Never are you going to have so many pictures taken of yourself in a single day – probably for the rest of your life (well unless you’re a professional model or something… and in that case- jealous!) There will be pictures snapped first thing in the morning light, under the fluorescent lights at the church, in the dimly lit reception space, and the lighting conditions in each place will be different! Make sure you look like your best self in all types of lighting. A quality professional can make sure that your skin tone will be even and glowing throughout the day!

2. Staying Power! Everyone and their dog will be hugging you, giving you kisses on the cheek, not to mention all the kisses from your new Hubby! Make sure that your makeup doesn’t end up all over your Dad’s new tux when he hugs you before walking you down the aisle. Makeup that stays will also ensure that your face and hair are picture perfect throughout the entire day-even after dancing the night away at your reception!

3. Peace of Mind. After months (or years!) of all the hard work and planning you put into the wedding, make sure you enjoy the day! Not having to stress about if your hair and makeup is going to turn out correctly is just another benefit you get by hiring a professional!

4. Time Saver! Often times, when a bride decides to DIY her hair and makeup, it can take much longer than anticipated which throws off the schedule of the entire day! Trust a professional, they have worked with countless brides and wedding parties, and can pretty much tell you down to the minute how long hair and makeup will take. Yeyy for staying on time!

5. It is Cost Effective to hire a professional. When brides decide to DIY their hair and makeup, most times they head out to nearest Sephora and try to buy great quality makeup. This type of makeup costs big bucks and most often brides never wear it again after their big day. All that cash that was spent on makeup could have been used to pay for a professional. No need to worry about color matching either, let’s leave that to the pros!

I have had the pleasure to work with Laura on multiple occasions (including the pictures shown in this post!), and each time the client’s hair and makeup has been perfection.  I have sent her a sample picture and my model looked identical to the picture, it was amazing! She can also come up with a vision just based on the conversations that we have. Luckily for all my future brides, I was able to get these insider tips straight from the pro herself!

When should a bride start looking for a hair and makeup artist?
Brides should book their hair and makeup artist 12 months in advance or as soon as they are sure they found an artist who fits their style and criteria.

What should a bride look for when choosing an artist?

1. Quality: Your artist should be using top of the line tools that are made for longevity and noncomedogenic and hypoallergenic products (least likely to cause skin irritation and an allergic reaction).
2. Skill: Hiring a professional that is skilled in all skin types, tones, textures and ages is so important. Make sure your artist has a diverse portfolio and not just a human stamp machine (doing the same look on every person that sits in the chair). Does your artist know how to make the hair and makeup look good in person and on the camera? Both are equally important. Can the artist do traditional makeup and airbrush? Make sure the artist can work with all hair types and textures including curly hairstyling and natural hairstyling.
3. Education: Make sure your professional is properly licensed in skin and/or cosmetology.
4. Sanitation: There are very important and often overlooked sanitation practices that true professionals must follow. It is important to make sure your professional is following such practices to prevent the spread of germs, bacteria, ect. Use of disposable mascara wands, lip wands and palettes with spatulas keeps products safe from being cross contaminated.
